Welcome! I'm thrilled to be sharing the premier issue of Delighted with you! As you flip through these pages, I hope you find photos and stories that bring you inspiration and delight.

It has been such a joy putting together a magazine that features so many of the things I have always love d to read about—expe-riences from business women, heartfelt thoughts from a mom, fashion trends, seasonal cooking, and so on. My wish is that you will learn something new as you peruse each page.

Because I could not have done this without a great deal of help, I would like to thank the talented contributors who have given their time and energy by providing beautiful photos and thoughtful insights. I must also thank my dear family and friends who have been incredibly encouraging and excited for me each step of the way. How would you describe your decorating style? Cheerfully modern

Where do you look for design inspiration? I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by design inspiration every day as part of my profession, however I find the best source of inspiration is an accidental encounter best discovered by look-ing around…Also, I am a close follower of design/photogr aphy / f a sh ion blogs, love to follow local artists, and most of all, find inspiration from travel.

How many square feet is your studio? 450 sf (there’s no better activity for a foggy Sunday than measuring one’s apartment!)

What key features did you look for when choos-ing a studio?Location, price (out of ne-cessity), an updated kitch-en (hello dishwasher!) and decent mid-day light, al-though the adjacent build-ings are a stone’s throw away.

What feature in your current apartment is your favorite?Tall ceilings, although stan-dard to many older San Francisco apartments, helps the space appear larger than it is. Also, I was able to find a studio with a dining nook that allows me to entertain without feel-ing too crowded. I must admit, the saving grace of my studio is the oversized walk-in closet, which was originally a sleeping alcove and now houses all my

clothes, shoes and books.

What decorating tips would you give to other studio dwellers?Before you move into a studio, purge! Also, if pos-sible, the furniture should be proportionate to the space so that the rooms are not cluttered. Try ex-perimenting with pops of color and do not be afraid to mix things up a bit from season to season. One can always rotate art on the walls and change out pillows or a bedspread so that the space feels new again. Make your space personal by creating small vignettes on shelves or tables and add touches of greenery with low-main-tenance plants (succulents and air plants are simple, sculptural and work with many types of décor).

What pieces do you splurge on? Save on?I try to take advantage of design discounts when-ever possible (hence the

Eames chairs I have start-ed collecting). Spend a bit more on pieces that you can foresee having in 15 years…and save on items that may be temporary.

What is your favorite piece of furniture or art-work?

This is a tough one…The New York bandshell photograph my boyfriend took that reminds me of New York in a subtle way, some prints by Jay Ryan that give a youthful feel to my space and the hand-blown glass hanging ter-rarium in my kitchen.

When did you open your shop and what inspired you to take those first steps?I opened my shop Baby Jives Co. in August 2010. After searching for a unique mobile when I was pregnant with my first child and not finding any-thing that really fit my needs I decided to make one myself using fabric that I had leftover from quilts I had made years ago. I loved the results and many of my friends were having babies at the same time and kept asking me to make them a mobile as well. I thought, “hmm this may be a business” so I registered my shop name

with Etsy shortly before my son was born in January 2009 but it took me almost a year and a half to get things ready (and to get my son sleeping so I could actually work).

Where does your design in-spiration come from? I find that I am most inspired by my interactions with my kids and seeing the magic of the world through their eyes. One of my recent designs was inspired by my son's favorite book Toy Boat which I have read about 100 times. After you read a book that many times you almost have it memorized so I

We fell in love with her whimsical mobiles the moment we dis-covered her well-designed Etsy site last spring. We asked her to share her experience starting an Etsy shop and juggling motherhood with business ownership.

found my mind wandering while reading to the idea of creating my own toy boat out of fabric and sticks. Another mobile was conceived on a summer day when we were at the botani-cal gardens. My son spent half an hour chasing the butterflies from rose bush to rose bush and I thought. “what a wonder-ful moment; I want to capture this and bring it home.” And the butterfly mobile was born.

What is unique about Baby Jives Co. mobiles?My mobiles are created as works of art that are meant to grow up with a child. They are

really small sculptures created to delight both children and adults so they will last long past the nursery. Also unlike many mobiles out there which are made of materials like plastic my mobiles are made from nat-ural materials like cotton fabric, wood and metal so they will not fill a home with pollutants.

What was the greatest chal-lenge you faced during your first year in business?Finding time to work and bal-ance my family. I would often work during naps and then at night when my son went to sleep. Balancing family and work is still

a challenge, especially now that I have a newborn daughter in the mix but when you are pas-sionate about something you simply find a way to do it.

What has been your most ex-citing sale or learning experi-ence since opening?My most exciting sale was my very first sale on Etsy. It was a week after I opened my shop and my photos were terrible but the woman who bought the mobile was so enthusiastic about it. She purchased it as a gift for her best friend and let me know how much she loved it. It was at that moment that I thought to myself - ok, this could be a real business.

How do you utilize social media to engage customers and drive traffic to your shop?

You can find me on facebook at www.facebook.com/babyjives , twitter at twitter.com/babyjives and pinterest at pinterest.com/babyjives. I find that facebook is the media where I can connect more with customers to show them new products, tell them

about giveaways, and simply talk out as a mom running a business. Twitter is what I call my virtual water cooler. There I will post snippets from my day whether it be observations on parenting and funny things my kid says or a snapshot of something that I am working on in the studio. I find Twitter is more about net-working with other profession-als for me and Facebook is more about connecting with custom-ers. Pinterest is an interesting spot for me and I find that it's my second largest traffic source after Google.

Can you tell us about a busi-ness risk you've taken since starting Baby Jives Co.? What came of it?I contacted a few bloggers to see if they might be interested in featuring Baby Jives Co. when I was first starting out. For me it was a risk because there was a chance for rejection, which I did get from a few of them but one blog which I really admired got right back to me and ended up writing a wonderfully thought-ful feature on Baby Jives Co.

It's something that never would have happened if I hadn't sum-moned up the courage to reach out.

Being a mom and a business owner must have its chal-lenges. How do you balance family, work and play?My family comes first, always. I started my business so I could have the freedom to raise my

children and I sometimes have to remind myself of that when I am buried in orders and losing patience with my kids because they are demanding more atten-tion and time than I have to give. I try to work during the week and at nights when my kids are not up and limit my work on the weekends to one day so that I can have a day to spend focused entirely on my family. I think right

now with two young kids I often feel guilty that I am neglecting them to focus on the business but then I have to remind myself that if I had a normal job they would be in daycare and see me much less. Fortunately I have also convinced my husband that sitting next to me on the couch at night while I work on orders and he watches TV is quality bonding time.

What's the best advice (busi-ness or personal) you've received since Baby Jives' inception?Follow your passion and be kind to yourself. I remind myself of that last part all the time since I tend to get frustrated that I can't get more done in a day than I do.

9:30 am Go out somewhere to let my son run and play while my daughter naps 12 pm Home to feed everyone again

2 pm Naptime for the kids (fingers crossed my son naps) and work time for me

5pm Make dinner and rejoice that my husband is home to lend a hand

8pm Bedtime for the kids

9pm - 12am Work in the studio again, until I stumble downstairs to col-lapse and sleep between night feedings for my daughter.

What has been the most rewarding part of owning a small business?Hands down it would have to be the fact that I can raise my children while continuing to be creative and make money. Run-ning my own business means on a nice day I can escape to the playground with my kids while I keep up with custom-ers on my smartphone. I am raising my business and my kids simultaneously and while my children are small I am building my business slowly and plan-ning carefully so that as they grow and need less of my time I can give more of my time to my business.

Are there any books or busi-ness resources you would recommend to other aspiring entrepreneurs?I have a tendency to fly by the seat of my pants but I do love reading business advice online when I can from sites like Mogul Mom, Smaller Box, Scoutie Girl, Handmadeology, and Designing an MBA.

What are some of your fa-vorite Etsy shops?I could list about 100 shops but I will narrow it down. Some of my favorite shops for my kids are Armadillo Dreams, The Measure, Friendly Fairies, and Little Alouette. Some of my favorite shops for myself are Balanced, The Wheatfield, Ordinary Mommy, and My Selvaged Life.

What did you want to be when you were younger? I knew I’d be doing some-thing in business – When I was young I always had a business on the side (sell-ing bracelets to my mom’s co-workers, lemonade and rocks to my neighbors)

What was your major and where did you earn your degrees? I earned a bachelors degree from Santa Clara University. My major was Finance with a Retail Management minor. Then I went back to school while I was still working full time to get my MBA from San Francisco State University.

How did you end up working for Gap, Inc.? Part of being in the Retail Management program at SCU, it was required that you get a retail internship the summer between your Junior and Senior year. I really wanted to work at Gap, Inc. and it turns out they thought I’d be a good fit, so I ended up being one of Old Navy’s first interns the summer of 1998. I didn’t end up working at Old Navy right after college, but I always had a fond-ness for the company and after a few years buying/planning hardline products

What does your role at Old Navy entail? I probably have the coolest job in the company. I get to pick the product that goes into the register lanes at Old Navy. My product is so unique and varied (everything from toys to tech gadgets to candy) that it never gets old.

What was some of the best advice you received along the way? Never take a job for the people, they always change. And, if you do get stuck in a job with a crazy boss, stick it out—you’ll usually outlast them!

What are some of the greatest challenges you’ve faced on your path to your current position? In the beginning of my career, I found it was difficult to be taken seriously be-cause I was so young. There are a lot of people in retail who’ve been doing it for a long time and forget that good ideas and creative thinking can come from any level in an organization.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? When people tell me that they bought a bunch of my product when they were in Old Navy and they can’t believe how cool, fun, unique, or how much of a great value it was!

Where do you see yourself in f ive years? I still see myself within Gap, Inc. It’s a great company with a lot of smart people and good opportunities.

What advice would you give to others considering a similar career? You don’t need to have a degree in business, but you do have to be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up. Many retailers have a management program where you get to work in various functions within the company for a period of time and then ultimately get placed in one that best suits you. That’s what I did coming out of college and it was invaluable in shaping my path.

What is hiip?hiip [helping individuals in passing] is a bag com-pany with a purpose. They come in multiple colors and patterns and they put the fun in multifunctional. We've got adorable styles to choose from and there are so many ways to wear them [on or off the belt and even as a clutch]. The best part about the com-pany, though, is the social component. For every hiip bag you purchase, we donate a hiip kit to a person in need. The kits are filled with basic ne-cessities and we encour-

age those who are in the area to go with us on hiip handouts to pass them out. The idea is that we give back while we build the community through purposeful interactions.

Tell us how the idea for hiip came to be?I was actually sitting in my apartment eating dinner and finishing up the book Start Something That Matters by Blake Mycoskie and just asked myself what I could do with my skill set. I thought about what I was good at, who I wanted to impact, and

how I could merge the two. The idea of redesign-ing the fanny pack came to mind and I went with it. I am a person of high but risky fashion sense so I wasn't sure I could con-vince people that it was time to bring this neces-sary item back into rota-tion; my gut told me a solid yes but I didn't hedge my bets until I passed it by a few friends. I have a heart for those in great need, a huge part of which is the homeless community in America (San Francisco more specifically), and I felt that hiip bags could be beneficial all around. The

need. What could be better?

best part about it is that I started implementing and researching the idea the next day!

What inspired you to start this venture?I met Blake [Mycoskie] at a meeting in mid-2011 and my adoration for his social entrepreneurship model was heightened; I had followed him for about four years up to that point. Once I read the book, I knew it was time. I had wanted to start my own company since I was around 22 years old but I was never sure what it would look like. Once I put some real thought (and heart) into it, the idea was as clear as day. As I've gotten older I've realized that once I put my mind to something, I make it happen.

What has been the greatest challenge in starting this venture?Learning everything! I have no idea how to sew so Kristina, my stellar design-er/seamstress, has been a

true blessing. She was able to conceptualize what I was trying to describe in my head and made the pieces so well. I also knew nothing about busi-ness. I studied Journalism at Pepperdine and to this day have never had a busi-ness class. Needless to say I've spent a lot of time getting opinions, perusing the SBA website, and talk-ing to my financial advi-sor brother to get up to speed... really quickly.

What has been most rewarding?Learning everything! Just figuring each bit out is ex-citing. I'm constantly chal-lenged and not only am I finding how true and wonderful my friends and family are as they offer every bit of support that they can but I'm seeing myself grow as a person. It's an amazing gift to know that you will be truly impacting lives because of an idea you've had; what's even better is that every-one that surrounds me will be involved as well. I can't

wait to see it... each step of the way is a reward in itself (including getting my packaging tissue!).

How have you managed to start a small business while working full-time? I can tell you this: it hasn't been easy. When I first started out at the end of last year, I wasn't as busy because I was testing the waters with friends and getting a pulse on wheth-er my idea would gain traction. At the beginning of this year, I took a trip around the world and as soon as I got back, I emailed Kristina; I was en-ergized and ready to go! Once I began to dedicate more time to hiip, though, I wasn't getting too much sleep. I would work all day and then come home and spend hours on the internet figuring out the documentation I needed to start a small business in California - we don't make it easy, you know! I travel quite a bit for work, too, so it's been an in-teresting ride. Thankfully

I love my corporate job, along with my team, and they are very support-ive of hiip and its success. I can tell others this: it's great because it's hard, it's fun because it's hard. Anything worth having is hard. Don't let having an-other job get you down; in fact, you should keep it until you're sure you will succeed in your new ven-

ture. I've had to miss out on nights out with friends but I know that it will be worth it in the very near future.

What is your goal for hiip over the next five years? I'm so glad you asked! I get beyond excited when I think about this type of thing. Well, excited and overwhelmed at the

same time. After we really become a well-known brand within San Francisco, I'm hoping to begin hiip handouts in other major cities around the country. Most closely I'm thinking of LA and New York because of contacts I have there. Of course I'd like to be in stores from Kansas City to Cincinnati to Chicago—there are people in need

everywhere. After that I'd like to see us go interna-tional. Our primary focus will continue to be within the US, though, because I believe that charity truly begins at home.

What do you love most about the product itself?I love that it's actually a hip bag. I get frustrated easily when my purse constantly falls off my shoulders. Maybe I have droopy shoulders—who can say? —but I love that I can strap it on and run to brunch. Or to the market. Or to the gym. Or to the airport. Hip bags are totally functional and all they needed was some modernization and cute patterns. Now that we've nailed that (if I do say so), I love that I have an easy option to wear around town at any time. I can even wear it as a clutch for evening or just for a different look!

Which bag is your personal favorite?I have two: the floral cor-duroy and the black and white mini-chevron. Both are so adorable to me - the floral because it's so sweet and girly and the mini-chevron because of the rich texture of the fabric.

What is the best business advice you have received since starting hiip?Don't wait, do it now. We've all heard that "the best time is now" and it truly is. One of my favorite quotes, when I'm thinking of putting something off, is "This time next year, you'll be glad you start-ed today". So true. How many things I could've ac-complished by this time if I had started a year back? Along with that, my mom always encourages me to keep thinking of pos-sibilities while continuing to pursue my dream. She

really has the best busi-ness advice: keep on.

What advice would you give to others who are considering starting a business that gives back?Think of something that is both new and needed. Why not rethink what's already out there? What is a group that you love, that you feel drawn to help? What do they need to survive or live better? How can you impact your immediate community? Once you think about that, you can create some-thing that can help them and be beneficial to those who you want to buy it. Business will succeed if you have something to offer that others don't; the community that you desire to help will succeed because ultimately, I be-lieve, people want to help but they just need the op-portunity. We need more opportunities to make a difference!

Plum & Thyme Galette

From Emily: "Galettes are essentially free-form pies. They can be filled with an array of fruits and deliver excellent eye-appeal for showing off Summer’s bounty. I enjoy accenting the fruit with herbs. Other tasty combinations are apricot and tarragon or peach and basil."

FOR FILLING

1 ½-2 lbs plums, sliced into wedges (about 6 large)

2-3 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves re-moved from stems

6- 8 Tbsp sugar, depending on the sweetness of the fruit

Pinch salt

1 Tbsp milk, for glazing crust

1 Tbsp turbinado or coarse sugar

FOR CRUST

1 ½ cups flour

1 Tbsp. sugar

¼ tsp. salt

9 Tbsp. (1 stick + 1 Tbsp) cold butter, cut into small pieces

2-5 Tbsp. ice water

In a large bowl or food processor, mix the flour with the sugar and salt. Distribute the butter around the bowl and pulse for about six, 2-second pulses, until the mixture is evenly crumbly but not as fine as sand. (Crusts may also be prepared by hand by using a pastry blender or two knives to “cut-in” the butter). To test how much water is required, grab a handful of dough and make a fist. If it crum-bles right apart, a higher range of ice water will be required, but if it holds its shape the dough will not require as much. Add the water in 1-tablespoon increments, quickly pulsing to incorporate and testing as described above. When it holds it’s shape, transfer everything onto a board. Carefully gather the dough together, taking care to avoid handling it too much, and flatten into a disc. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine the plum segments with the sugar and allow to stand together. Season lightly with salt and stir through the thyme.

Preheat the oven to 400˚

After the pastry has chilled, roll out the crust on a lightly floured surface or between two silicone mats until it is about a 13-inch round (it need not be perfectly round). Transfer the entire silicone mat atop a baking sheet and gently indicate a 2-inch border (this will be folded over the fruit).

Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fruit into the center of the designated border, and flatten into a plateau-shaped mound.

Fold the outer border over the fruit, overlapping to secure the fruit filling. Brush the exposed crust with the milk and sprinkle a coarse sugar over everything.

Place the galette in the oven and turn the heat down to 375°. Bake until the crust is golden and the fruit filling is gently bubbling, about 30-35 minutes. Allow to cool for 10 minutes on a baking sheet before transferring to a board. Slice into wedges and serve.

Summer Salad with Stone Fruits & Fresh Ricotta

From Emily: "This recipe is a great template and can be adjusted throughout the season to accommodate fruit as they come into their prime. Mixing a bit of fruit into the salad dressing tempers the acidity of the dressing."

FOR SALAD

8 oz. mixed salad greens

2 Tbsp. fresh mint, chopped

3 oz. fresh ricotta or Yarra Valley Dairy marinated feta

2 peaches, plums or apricots, sliced into slender slices

¼ cup dry –roasted or Marcona almonds

FOR DRESSING

1 small shallot, minced

3 Tbsp. sherry vinegar

1 pitted cherry or 1 fresh fig or 1 Concord grape, minced or mashed

½ tsp. salt

½ tsp fresh thyme

6 Tbsp olive oil

Begin by preparing the salad dressing. Mince together the shallot, thyme and if available, cherry, fig or grape until everything is very fine. Transfer into a small bowl and cover with the sherry vinegar. Add the salt and whisk everything together, allowing to stand for at least 5 minutes, to mellow the sharpness of the shallot. While whisking quickly, slowly pour the olive oil into the vinegar base to create an emulsion. Season with additional salt and pepper and set aside. Extra dressing may be stored in a jar at room tempera-ture for two weeks.

In a large bowl, combine the salad greens with the mint and toss to combine. Just before serving, toss the salad greens with the dressing and transfer onto serving plates. Arrange the fruit slices on top and add dollops of the cheese. If desired, almonds may be added at the finish.

Noelle's mom, Cheryl, shares the three prin-ciples she used in designing this room:

Infant-focused decor It was important to me that the decor in her room not just be pretty, but stimulating for an infant. Infants like to look at objects with high contrast, so the tree decals and wall prints were designed to be simple and clean with clear edges. The hot air bal-loons and animal mobile were made with very light materials so that a gentle breeze would send them bobbing to keep Noelle occupied.

Smart storage I kept the room clutter-free by keeping anything we use daily (e.g. diapers, wipes) in the top dresser drawer, and put-ting storage boxes under the crib skirt for blankets or sheets. Picture rails also allow us to display books and toys within easy reach.

Varied Textures Rich textures can really warm up a room and make it look sophisticated. I chose fabric that had a thicker weave for her pillows and added chunky-knit throws and blankets. A basket and some pinecones brought in more organic textures but were painted grey to keep them in the color palette.

Having a child with a disability is the best thing

that has ever happened to us.

A quick background story: about a girl and boy who had the world at their fingertips. College sweet hearts that, from the day they met, couldn't resist one another. They loved each other blamelessly and said, "I do" to a life full of joyfully perfect memo-ries. Once married, they would lie in bed at night and whisper sweet nothings about their future offspring to one another... "He’ll have your eyes", no, "She'll have your sweet smile". When the day came and the pregnancy test was positive, they held each other and wept for the miracle of life within her. When he would caress her stomach with all the tenderness of the soon-to-be father, it made her love him more

deeply than she would have ever imagined she could. The day their little girl was born was the day their life really started. She had his face, and her eyes. She was beautiful, so they named her Bella.

Two years later, in a room full of medical professionals, the words, “Bella has autism” were uttered. The path laid before them now was dangerously narrow. The world that was at their fingertips long ago seemed so far from within reach now. Their love was tested. Their child was...different.

I am Annie, my husband is Josh, and our daughter is Bella…she has autism, and it's the best thing that

has ever happened to us. If your child has had a similar diagnosis, it could be the best thing that has happened to you as well. Here's why…

Your child will teach you to fight for joy every day.When your child is diagnosed with a disability, joy is hard to come by at first. When Bella was diagnosed with autism, I cried for a week straight. I had headaches from the seemingly constant weeping. I was mourning her future, a future that was so vastly different than the one I dreamed of with my husband before her birth. One day, I looked into Bella's eyes and realized that she was perfect. She was made by her Creator just the way she was

meant to be. This future that I was mourning had never really existed, and that gave me a unique comfort. From that day forward, I fought for joy every second of the day. Today, I can honestly say that I am more joyful because of Bella's disability. She may not ever speak to me the way I pictured my daughter speak-ing or walk down the aisle to the man she loves as I did... but, she feels the love we give her everyday, a love that is full of joy!

You will never take the “little things” in life for granted.The moment your child is diag-nosed, all the big things in life are broken up into little pieces. It's almost like looking at a beautiful painting through a kaleidoscope.

All of the colors and elements are present but in such disarray, it's hard to make them out. The future, in a moment, becomes so uncer-tain for the parent. Will my child live with me until I die? Will I die before them? How will they take care of themselves? This list goes on and on and lies hidden deep within the par-ent's heart. So, the little things in life become huge. You have to celebrate first smiles, or words (if they speak), or steps (if they walk), or for some parents...the celebration is for a beating heart and functioning lungs. I tell parents who have fully function-

ing children to never take the “little things” in life for granted. Not a word, a smile, a scream, a mistake…anything. While you are worrying about how "grumpy" your child is acting today, we are concerned that our child might damage their brain when they bang their head on the wall during an autistic tantrum. You might be tired of your child talking to you, while we rejoice when our child attempts to utter even a sound. It's the little things in life that make a special needs parent smile and we cherish them in our hearts.

You will be the last to cast judgment on other parents.I remember being that mom, the one that rolled her eyes in the supermarket. The one that thought, "Wow, she needs to learn how to control her kid". Well, now that I have a child with autism, things are VERY different. Autism exhib-its itself in many ways, one being through intense tantruming. When your child tantrums at home, it's exhausting but you feel somewhat in control in your safe and famil-iar environment. When they do it in public, it's just plain hard. People look at you with disgust and you begin to imagine the things they must be thinking about you, "Why doesn't she spank her?", "Why is she just letting her do that?", "Look at that woman constraining her child!". I used to break out into a literal sweat as I tried to help my child through a public and very physical tantrum. The lowest point I reached was when someone told me to put a dog muzzle on Bella at a restaurant because they couldn't "hear each other speak" through her blood curdling screams. I tell you this because today, when I see a crying child, my first thought

is never about how terrible the parent is…lets change our per-spective today and cut each other some slack.

You will know God in a very real way!When I decided to fight for joy, I found it in God. I clung to Psalm 139:13 in the Bible that said, "For you created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb". To me, this verse speaks such truth to parents who have children with disabilities. The Cre-ator’s hands fashion these sweet beings and place them within our wombs. I thank God he chose me for Bella. How was I so lucky? He knew my husband and I would love her despite her "perfect imperfec-tions". It's true, we do! It's believing in a God that never makes mistakes that helps us find joy within disabil-ity. Maybe you have a child with a disability and need a “fresh per-spective” on things, or maybe you don't share this journey but can now begin to cherish the unique path set before you today. The fact remains, disability is a blessing that God gives to special families. Cherish what life has brought you; it was meant to be!
