Fact-Checking Alert: Unveiling the Truth Behind a Viral Claim
A recent Facebook post has sparked controversy, claiming to show a truck transporting Fano uniforms from Mekelle. But here's the catch: it's FALSE.
The post, written in Amharic, suggests that Almeda Textiles is producing uniforms for the extremist group Fano, and that a truck carrying these uniforms has been intercepted, seemingly originating from Mekelle. It goes on to imply that the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) is supplying weapons and clothing to this gang.
However, a deeper investigation reveals a different story. The images in the post are not what they seem. A reverse image search, along with official statements from the Ethiopian Federal Police and the Ethiopian News Agency, confirm that these photos are old and do not depict the claimed incident.
The Federal Police's verified Facebook page published the photos on September 7, 2021, stating that their Anti-Smuggling Unit had seized 155 tons of contraband clothing items on September 5, 2021. These items were en route to Addis Ababa from Hosanna in the Southern Region, via Butajira.
Furthermore, PesaCheck, a fact-checking organization, found no credible reports of Almeda Textile producing uniforms for Fano. In fact, it was reported in 2024 that Almeda Textile PLC was among the industries destroyed during the war in Tigray.
So, what's the truth behind this viral post? It's a case of misinformation, where old images have been used to support a false narrative. And this is the part most people miss: the power of fact-checking in uncovering the truth.
PesaCheck, in partnership with Facebook and other social media platforms, plays a crucial role in sorting fact from fiction. By providing deeper insight and context to posts, they empower the public to make informed decisions.
