This innovative approach has shown promising results in rats, blocking up to 98% of fentanyl from entering the brain and lasting for an extended period.
But here's where it gets controversial: Will this vaccine be effective against high doses of fentanyl? Addiction medicine specialist Sharon Levy raises a valid concern. While the vaccine may work for accidental exposure, individuals with opioid use disorder might attempt to override its effects by taking higher doses of opioids, which could be life-threatening.
The target groups for this vaccine include teenagers and young adults who may unknowingly consume fentanyl in street drugs, as well as individuals in active treatment for opioid use disorder. However, Mike Selick from the National Harm Reduction Coalition expresses concern about the vaccine's potential impact on other opioids, limiting pain management options for vaccinated individuals.
The upcoming Phase 1/2 trial in the Netherlands will be a crucial test, evaluating the vaccine's safety and efficacy. ARMR is also exploring an oral formulation for future trials, making it more accessible. Meanwhile, CounterX Therapeutics is developing a short-acting monoclonal antibody therapy, offering month-long protection against overdose.
