Neutral fan, don't have a dog in the fight, but am a fan of Sam Bennett.

With rumors about Boston's difficulty signing Pastrnak, what does each side think of a deal like this?

On the surface, Calgary gets their young goal scoring top 6 RW.
Boston gets a young center who fits their "style" perfectly and has top 6 potential as Krejci and Bergeron continue to age.

Who says no, who has to add, what has to be added, etc.

Hmm both players are the same age and one got 70 points last year and the other got 26.

I am a big Sam Bennett fan but this is beyond ridiculous.

This thread should be closed and the OP should hang his head in shame.

Honestly IMO its the worst proposal of the off season so far. Congrats.

Bennett's value is low, and the Flames rightfully value him very high. Unless they got a player like Pasta back, there's no reason to move him. Having said that, Boston has zero reason to do this unless he were to refuse to sign.

Even then, the Flames would have to add big time. Seeing as they are short on 1st and 2nd rounders it would have to be something significant from their current roster. Which I don't see them giving up for a player looking for a Draisaitl like contract.

I don't disagree but Bennett is one Drouin like season away from essentially closing any gap. So while in a vacuum, Pasta is 100% a far more valuable player. But if the Flames are high on Bennett (and they are), they have no reason to add a ton of assets but they'll hurt themselves more in the long term.

I'm curious at to which team you follow because if you watched both of these guys in the NHL to this point you'd realize how poor of a proposal this is.

Calgary adds A LOT. We honestly cannot afford Pastrnak, as much as I'd want him we can't.

Can I ask in all sincerity why? I'm genuinely curious. Is it just the upside of Bennett playing at C? That's all I can think of.

I hope this is a because Gaudreau would return more thing, but considering you said you were fine with subbing in Gaudreau instead of Bennett back on the first page it doesn't sound like that's what it is.

Bennett is awful. Literally only has value at this point because of his draft position and bias Flames fans on these boards.

This proposal is terrible.

I think Gaudreau is worth Pasta, especially to Boston with his history there and considering the contract situation going on with the B's. And if I put my feelings as a fan for Gaudreau aside, I prefer Pasta who is someone I've followed closely since being drafted. Not by a lot, but enough that I would do it because it fills a position of need and we wouldn't lose any offence.

Now to Bennett. The Flames would need to add to Bennett significantly because as of today, he isn't worth Pasta. And for how much I value Bennett, the add would only be worth it this offseason and going forward it would look like a bad deal. Playing in the West, it is crucial that in your top 6 you have skill, size, speed and toughness. Bennett checks all these boxes and he's a C. And in the event that Gaudreau was dealt, Bennett could step in and play on the wing. We also have Tkachuk who I also like more than Johnny and I would be more than comfortable making that swap and adding Pasta to our roster for Johnny. I just like the elements that Bennett adds to a team and he brings many aspects that Johnny does not.

I'd take a 60pt pitbull over a 80pt poodle when you look at the make up of our team.

You really don't know what you're talking about. Bennett had a disappointing season without question, but he's already an everyday NHL player. Something the players you mentioned, are not.

Then you're not watching him and only looking at the stat sheets. His defensive game is sound and he looked much better at the end of the year. He can be clumsy, which could feasibly stop him from ever scoring like a star, but he'll still be an NHL player.

To compare him to Virtanen is putrid and inaccurate.

Doesn't make OP's proposal any less ridiculous though.

So do you just not like Gaudreau or something? I would not trade Gaudreau for Pasta as imo Gaudreau is an elite talent and drives his entire line. Even in an off-year with no training camp, no time to build chemistry or learn the system, missing games, playing injured, and being the most focused guy on our team by opponents, he still put up an amazing PPG and the most points out of our entire team. Just look at the monthly splits; after the team learned the system and gained chemistry in the first few months, he was on fire nearly every game (despite playing injured in at least 10 of those). He's not even a no-show in the playoffs like some would have you believe.

Pasta is not a bystander but not the main driver on his line either (I don't think that line has a main driver). He's impressed in every season he's played in, despite playing fourth/third line minutes for his first two seasons. However, with the quality of his linemates considered and the kind of chemistry he has with them, I feel like his value comes a little more back down to earth. I could definitely see him reaching Gaudreau's level but then again, this kind of trade is banking on potential.

If it doesn't work out, our offence loses its most dynamic player and loses skill. If it does, we might get a marginally better player who would make our offence only slightly better. The risk isn't worth the reward.

30 point young player for 30 goal young player. Seems legit.

Boston should not even fleetingly consider a deal for Pastrnak that has Sam Bennett as the most valuable piece coming back.

David Pastrnak
Regular season 172 games 59 goals 64 assists 123 points
2016-17 regular season 75 games 34 goals 36 assists 70 points
Playoffs 6 games 2 goals 2 assists 4 points

vs.

Sam Bennett
Regular season 159 games 31 goals 32 assists 63 points
Playoffs 15 games 5 goals 1 assist 6 points

David Pastrnak is the much better player and Sam Bennett would be lucky to have a season as good as we saw from David Pastrnak. Boston shouldn't be trading him like this.

Lmao two players that aren't even close in value. Calgary adds unless pasta gets a 15 million AAV contract. Even then they probably add a 3rd but as is idk like Monahan
