Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, is strategically adjusting its crude oil imports to navigate the complex landscape of Western sanctions and international trade relations. The company has significantly reduced its purchases from Russia, a move that aligns with the Trump administration's sanctions and aims to maintain compliance with international regulations. This strategic shift has led to a notable decrease in Reliance's Russian crude imports, dropping to 534,000 barrels per day (bpd) in October, a 24% decline from September and 23% below the April-September average. The Russian portion of Reliance's imports now accounts for 43% of its total, down from 56% in September. This reduction is not solely due to recent US sanctions on Rosneti and Lukoil but also stems from earlier uncertainties, including the Trump administration's pressure tactics and punitive tariffs. To compensate for the reduced Russian supplies, Reliance has increased its imports from the Middle East, with Saudi Arabian volumes up by 87% and Iraqi supplies rising by 31%, contributing to 40% of total imports in October. Crude imports from the United States have also doubled to approximately 10% of Reliance's total intake, compared to 5% in September. The company's exposure to the US market is significant, with some of the biggest tech companies investing in its tech ventures. This exposure makes it crucial for Reliance to adhere to sanctions to avoid potential secondary sanctions. The company has officially stated its commitment to international sanctions, and the European Union has provided clarification on the import of Russian crude, allowing segregation and processing of non-Russian oil.
