A powerful message of resilience and patriotism has been delivered to the veterans of Uganda's liberation struggle. The Minister of State for Luwero Triangle and Rwenzori Region, Hon. Alice Kaboyo, has ignited a spark of inspiration among these brave individuals.
Hon. Kaboyo emphasized the importance of passing down the legacy of sacrifice and endurance to the younger generations. She highlighted how many veterans' children and grandchildren may not fully grasp the significance of their ancestors' contributions to Uganda's freedom. But here's where it gets controversial... She urged veterans to educate their families, ensuring that the spirit of patriotism lives on.
During her recent visits to veterans' families, Hon. Kaboyo observed the challenges they face due to age-related illnesses. She has taken a proactive approach, providing financial support for medical treatment and funeral expenses to 240 veterans. However, she acknowledged the limitations of resources, stating, "We wish to support more, but our hands are tied."
One of the key concerns raised by the veterans was the Akasiimo payments. Hon. Kaboyo explained that the program had been temporarily halted due to beneficiary complaints. She assured the veterans that the issue was being addressed, with an additional Shs 6.1 billion approved for payments to 2,462 beneficiaries from various districts. And this is the part most people miss... The Minister emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring that all veterans receive their due payments, despite resource constraints.
In addition to addressing veterans' welfare, Hon. Kaboyo highlighted the Ministry's development initiatives. She discussed the Parish Community Association Model, which was later merged with the Parish Development Model (PDM) under the Ministry of Local Government. Through this program, the Ministry supported 75 parishes in Greater Luwero, including Nakasongola, Nakaseke, and Luwero districts. In Nakasongola alone, the Ministry invested Shs 630 million to improve community development.
Hon. Kaboyo's office has also made significant strides in improving the lives of veterans and their families. She spoke about supporting the construction of schools affected by the liberation war, providing iron sheets and hoes to veteran families, and sustaining Akasiimo payments. A true testament to the government's commitment to its veterans.
The event was attended by the Minister of Public Service, Hon. Muruuli Mukasa, who emphasized the importance of electing capable leaders. He urged the public to look beyond tribal affiliations and focus on leaders who can drive national development. Hon. Muruuli also addressed allegations of government plans to evict citizens for a nuclear plant, clarifying that such claims are false and assuring fair compensation for any necessary relocations.
National Executive Member of Veterans, Mr. Kigundu Kabanda, expressed concerns over district leadership, citing poor road conditions and neglect of residents' welfare. He called for a shift towards electing leaders who prioritize community development.
Representing the youth, Mr. Ivan Kandyanako thanked the Minister for her support and encouraged continued assistance to engage youth in national development and mobilization efforts.
In her concluding remarks, Hon. Kaboyo emphasized the unity of the veterans' struggle, reminding them that it was always about Uganda as a nation. She urged continued support for the NRM government and President Museveni's vision of a transformed Uganda.
