1572- what's it worth? - Only Cub Cadets (9)1572- what's it worth?

Hey guys,
I just looked at a sweet 1572 in excellent condition with just over 1000 hrs. It has all the hydraulics and a rear PTO. Can anyone tell me what it's worth? Also...is this PTO a usable one? What I mean is....does it turn the proper directiion and can i still get a 3pt hitch for a plow or tiller set up? Thanks for your help.

If it actually has the rear PTO, it already has the 3-point hitch, although the arms may be missing. The rear PTO is not the splined shaft sticking out of the rear of the hydro pump, as a disturbing number of people selling these things seem to think. The PTO is 'usable' but the attachments are kind of rare and expensive. All of the hydraulics are standard so that isn't anything special. Make sure all 8 bolts that hold the rear to the frame are not loose, and that the front brackets that connect the frame to the rear haven't cracked or broken the rearend. I would personally be trying to get it for less than $1750 (assuming it at least has a mower deck...you didn't tell us if it includes any attachments) if it were me, as I can almost guarantee you'll have to do $200-300 worth of maintenance, mostly on the driveshaft. I've seen them sell for $2500-$3000, but I'm not convinced they're worth that anymore...prices seem to be down again.

Matt,
The PTO 'appears' to be splined...though I'm not exactly sure. It does have a 54 inch mower deck and it is also in excellent condition. The tag on the key says '20 hp', but I always thought they were 15 hp. His asking price is $3000, but he said it was negotiable. I figured maybe $2000....tops. Hmmm....your thoughts are appreciated!

The PTO has internal splines. If there is no black plate with a round hole and internally-splined PTO shaft in it, there is no 3-point and no rear PTO. If it looks like this, it have no rear PTO and no 3-point:

Keep in mind the tractor pictured does not have an aluminum rear like the 1572 you are looking at will, but you get the idea...

It's 15hp...anybody can write anything on a keychain... Is the deck a 54GT (later deck), or something else that the PO doesn't know what it actually is? If he doesn't know how many hp the tractor is, he probably doesn't know what size the deck is, either. The 1572 originally would have come with a 50" (50C) deck or 60" (60C) deck.

Wow, Matt.....I sure wish you could look at the tractor with me. I have some things to check out before I would ever buy it. As I remember, this tractor has a male end of a splined shaft that is located a foot or so from the very back of the machine. Since I'm not familiar with this machine, I've never seen a PTO on a 1572 before. As for the 20 hp tag, he's got some 'splainin to do.
Thanks so much.

I'm pretty sure that it doesn't have the rear PTO. The rear PTO has an internal spline of ~1" in diameter or so, and the trans output shaft spline is 5/8"-9. Is this what you're seeing?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
